Dear NERQies,

From the #NERQ SIG on Research Methods Education, we wish you all a merry X-mas! We look back on a great year with most of our focus on one project: carrying out a survey on research methodology teaching practices and perspectives across Europe.

\n

With the help of many collaborators we managed to gather responses from over 550 participants across Europe and from varying disciplines. We presented the design and some preliminary findings at the hashtag#WCRI in Athens and are now in the process of writing up the final results. We expect to submit these for publication in the first quarter of 2025. Huge thanks to Ivan Buljan for initiating and leading this project, and to our SIG members, other experts and all participating institutions, #reproducibilitynetworks and other networks that support this work.

We look forward to meeting you again in 2025, working together on the next steps in evidence-based research methodology education. HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Here is an update from SIG Curriculum of Responsible Research.

\n

Throughout the year, we have continued working on our article, which explores what a course in research ethics or research integrity for PhD students can and should include. We discussed the article’s content, among other occasions, at the 8th World Conference on Research Integrity. The article was submitted in September, but we have not yet received comments from the reviewers.

\n

Short description
\nThe article highlights the critical need for effective teaching strategies in research integrity (RI), addressing educators’ uncertainty about best practices. We advocate for an ethics-inclusive approach, emphasizing the ethical dimensions of research beyond regulatory compliance. The appendix includes a tested course package, offering practical content and guidance to help educators, especially those without ethics expertise, design meaningful RI courses. Focused on PhD students, the article aims to equip educators with tools to advance RI education and foster shared learning within the research community

\n

We strongly believe that our article can make an important contribution and we will continue refining it until it is accepted for publication.

\n

This SIG was formed with the purpose of exploring how the use of Generative AI influences researchers’ behavior and cognition, particularly in relation to their understanding and implementation of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) principles, as well as established research integrity policies.

The evolving role of Generative AI in research has significant implications for interactions between researchers, their subjects, and broader society. By critically examining these intersections, our goal was to provide insights, develop recommendations for universities, and create practical training materials to ensure that DEI and research integrity principles remain central to this transformation.

Although we are still at the beginning of this journey, having merged two existing SIGs to create this focused initiative, we are proud of the foundation we have built together. the year 2024 was extremely successful for our #SIG_OS and we thank all SIG-members as well as Julia Claire Prieß-Buchheit and Mariëtte Van Den Hoven and the whole #NERQ community for the wonderful collaboration!

\":clap:\" Our milestones:
\nIn spring 2024, we developed the #OpenScienceLearningGate (#GATE; more about it here: LinkedIn and here: LinkedIn), an online intersection that collects and disseminates knowledge about #OpenScience (#OS) guidelines from and to the research community, which are evaluated in parallel by GATE experts.

\n

The GATE will monitor OS practices over the coming years and will inform and update the OS community on current OS standards (based on majority nomination and expert evaluation) in our annual GATE Reports - also appointing trainers who have participated in the GATE and thus provide high-quality OS training. This makes the GATE an effective tool to support the harmonisation of OS standards and to promote high-quality OS training.

\n

In June we presented GATE at #WCRI24 to great public interest and in October to the #EuropeanCommission. In dialogues with experts, we have continued to refine the GATE questionnaire and were able to further expand the data collection (OS guidelines) in workshops, so that the GATE currently reflects a clear picture of the OS guidelines. Since November, we are collaborating with #OpenAIRE and will further expand the data collection with their Community of Practice for Trainers in January.

\n

As announced at the SIG lead meeting in Brussels we will close the NERQ_OS group with the GATE and describe from here on NERQ as the founder of the GATE. We will start a new NERQ_OS group which will touch the GATE from time to time and concentrate on #IntellectualProperty and #OpenScience in 2025.

It’s a big step!

\n

Our #NERQ Training (on October 17th and 18th, 2024) at the European Commission concluded successfully. The training focused on responsible research conduct, including #ResearchIntegrity (RI), #ResearchEthics (RE), #Reproducibility, and #OpenScience (OS) principles and applications.
\nWe were thrilled to empower more than 35 European trainers through comprehensive sessions, enhancing their understanding, skills, and commitment to teaching responsible research conduct.

\n

A diverse set of (new) academics from Europe joined us who train research integrity, ethics, and open science within their organisations or the wider scientific community.

\n

Experienced trainers from NERQ (Tamarinde Haven, Michiel de Boer, Katharina Miller, Giulia Inguaggiato, Mariëtte Van Den Hoven) multiplied the impact by covering topics such as RE&RI, OS, AI and Reproducibility.

\n

The training involved sessions on understanding Research Integrity and Open Science, didactical empowerment for RI and OS training, assessment strategies, engagement techniques, and a practical workshop for hands-on training design. Case studies, interactive Q&A sessions, and networking opportunities added depth to the learning experience.

\n

We proudly announce that the NERQ Training Program at EC has successfully equipped participants with the knowledge and skills to design and deliver training on research integrity, ethics, reproducibility and open science across Europe.

\n

Although the training was a full success, we failed to reproduce the group picture from days one and two. Have a look and spot the first trainee group of NERQ!

The SIG on Training Supervisors and Leadership hosted an interactive symposium at the WCRI in Athens. Dr Seán Lacey (Research Integrity & Compliance Officer) kicked off by presenting leadership challenges and opportunities from the perspective of a leader in a new Technological University in Ireland. International expert Dr Dena Plemmons (Director of the Research Ethics Education Program, University of California) presented her experiences in curriculum development and training for leadership in research integrity. Dr Bob Siegerink (Leiden University Medical Center) provided insight into the modernisation of the system of recognition and rewards to improve the PhD experience as well as the quality of research and leadership.

\n

Some SIG members are currently preparing a publication about the virtual marketplace that took place last March. The publication will be submitted to a special issue from Frontiers in Research Metrics and Analytics that Tamarinde Haven is co-editing. The virtual harvest from the marketplace can be found here - LinkedIn.

Grounded in 17 focus groups, Tamarinde developed an empirical conceptualisation of a good supervisory climate. You can read more about it here: LinkedIn.

we are happy to share exciting updates on the work of SIG_OS (special interest group on #OpenScience):

\n

Starting with the question of what are the guiding principles of Open Science (#OS) in order to implement them in OS education, we have developed the #OpenScienceLearningGate (#GATE) over the last few months and presented it at #WCRI24 to great acclaim.
\nWe will present the GATE to the #EuropeanCommission next week in Brussels.

\n

\":mega:\" About the GATE:
\nThe GATE is an effective intersection that (1) enables a process of harmonization of OS principles and (2) leads to high quality OS #trainings that are badged by the GATE. It categorizes the current research landscape by standardizing OS principles (as OS is already an established approach, even if there is a lack of standards for certain stakeholders) and identifies OS trainings that meet these standards (badged trainings). (3) It also meets the needs of 12 target groups of the research process.

\n

\":point_right:\" What do we need?
\nWe are currently asking OS trainers and developers of OS trainings to participate in the GATE (by working through this questionnaire: LinkedIn). In this way we collect and inform about current OS principles and facilitate the badging process for the participants.

\n

\":question:\" Would you like to know more about GATE?
\nOS trainers (and training developers) access the GATE and share their knowledge about their OS principles for their specific target groups. In turn, they learn which principles the community recommends. They use this knowledge to amend their training and are able to have their training badged if they implement a certain level of currently recommended principles (–> brand recognition). The GATE-badge identifies these trainings as high quality and in line with current OS standards for specific target groups.
\nThe GATE-process is based on community consensus: the principles are collected directly from practitioners, ranked on the basis of majority nominations and reviewed by experts.
\nThese results are published in annual reports and the participating trainers are regularly informed to enable updating their materials.

\n

Miriam van Loon will present the analysis of a study on the measures that are used to assess RCR education (to be found as preregistration on: OSF | Assessing the outcomes of responsible conduct of research education: A qualitative content analysis of validated measures )

\n

Next to that, we will brainstorm together on a joint research on the RCR education that you are involved in (can we e.g. use a similar research format/measure to collect data in various institutions to compare the effect of RCR education? and if so, what would such a study look like?). This brainstorm will be used to make concrete plans to study RCR training in our community in 2025.

This past week, we had the incredible opportunity to speak about the research methodological education across Europe Research Area. Our poster presentation, titled “A Cross-sectional Survey on Practices and Attitudes across the European Context: preliminary results” aimed to delve into how methodology is taught and values, both by research methodology teachers and non-methodology teachers in higher education .

\nTeachers: 246 participants took the survey so far, we are in the process obtaining greater sample
\nCountries: Majority of results currently comes from the Netherlands, Croatia, Germany, the UK, and Sweden
\nTopics: Most important topics which need to be implemented in research methodology education assessed both by research methodology teachers and non-methodology teachers were research integrity, hypothesis formulation and research reporting

\n\":arrow_right:\" Trainer Capacity in RCR Training: Currently, interactive methods are chosen. The need for a core curriculum and professional training was mentioned.

\":arrow_right:\"Focus on Compliance Over Capacity Building: Many existing RCR training programs prioritize regulatory compliance over building researchers’ capacities. Shifting this focus is essential but remains unlikely due to resource scarcity in the immediate future.

On Friday, 08 March 2024, Seán Lacey and I organised a Virtual Marketplace on Good Practice for Training Supervisors and Leadership. Twenty-three European experts participated in a dynamic exchange. Maia Thomas (LinkedIn) captured the main outputs from the event in a graphic harvest.

We will be using the graphic harvest as a conversation starter during the pre-conference workshops at WCRI and at our symposium on Leadership in promoting a research culture with integrity in institutions. We very much welcome you to join these conversations as well.

We are excited to share the following with you. Within the #NERQ special interest group on education of research methods, we have developed a survey which aims to explore the characteristics of teaching research methodology in higher education across Europe. With this survey, we hope to create an overview of attitudes and teaching formats across disciplines and countries related to teaching research methodology in higher education, to get a better understanding of current practices and needs. That will allow for sharing best practices and the design of educational interventions. With the survey we aim to target both teachers of research methodology and teachers of other subjects active in higher education (for more information, please visit OSF | Research Methodology Education: A cross-sectional survey on Practices and Attitudes across the European Context.

Many thanks to all those who have helped us revising and piloting the survey. The survey is now in its final format and we have ethical approval for our study granted by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Split. That means that we are ready to roll out the survey and we need your help.

We would like to ask you whether you could distribute the survey within your networks. In return to your contribution to data collection on this project, we will offer co-authorship of the final manuscript (in addition to the requirement of reviewing and signing off).
